History of United Way

United Way has been in existence for 120 years.  According to Brian Gallagher, CEO of United Way of America, in 1887 the first united campaign was held in Denver, Colorado.  During the ‘30’s & 40’s, United Way responded to the economic depression and natural disasters.  Following the war, we stretched to meet post-war social and urban challenges.  In 1973 we began our long-standing partnership with the NFL and in 1974 we formed United Way International.  In the ‘90’s we began our transformation to community impact, and in 2008 we committed to our national goals to advance the common good through education, income and health.

United Way of Cullman

The Cullman office was opened on May 23, 1979.  United Way of Cullman County implemented 2-1-1, an information and referral line that connects people to vital social services, in 2008.  The local office is dedicated to insuring that this community has access to help when they need it most.  Underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do, we are all people.  Connected, interdependent, united.  And when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all.  That’s what it means to live united.
